Actos Side Effects

Congenative Hear Failure, Macular Edema, Hypoglycemia

In June 2011 it was discovered that patients using Actos (Pioglitazone) for a year or longer have a substantially increased risk of bladder cancer. In addition, Actos can also be linked to the following side effects:

Weight Gain - Actos is known to cause weight gain. The average weight gain is two to 12 pounds. If you experience rapid weight gain while taking Actos it may be due to fluid retention which is a symptom of congestive heart failure.

Congestive Heart Failure - Actos can cause congestive heart failure and in people who already have congestive heart failure, it can make the condition worse. Heart failure means your heart does not pump blood well enough. Symptoms can include fluid retention, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

Hypoglycemia - When Actos is taken with sulfonylureas or insulin it can cause low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia occurs when blood glucose drops below normal levels.

Macular Edema / Vision Problems - patients who use Actos are three to six times more likely to suffer macular edema. Macular edema is a swelling or thickening of the macula, the area of the retina responsible for central vision, which can lead to loss of vision or blindness.

Additional Side Effects Include can include: cold or flu-like symptoms, headache, sinus infection, sore throat, tooth disorder, muscle pain, upper respiratory tract infection and fractures (especially in women).

If you experience any of the following symptoms or those mentioned in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately:

  • changes in vision or loss of vision
  • frequent, painful, or difficult urination
  • cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine
  • back or abdominal pain
