The FDA, reviewed an interim report of a 10-year study of a bladder cancer-Actos connection and found a suspected link between Actos and bladder cancer. Recently, the FDA reported that patients using Actos (Pioglitazone) for a year or longer have a substantially increased risk of bladder cancer. You should not take Actos if you are receiving treatment for bladder cancer.

Because of this increased risk current and past users of Actos should be aware of the symptoms of bladder cancer and should tell your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms of bladder cancer:

Cancer of the bladder is the fourth most common cancer among men and the ninth most common cancer among women. The American Cancer Society’s estimates about 73,500 new cases of bladder cancer diagnosed with approximately 15,000 deaths this year in the U.S.

Bladder cancer is almost always curable if detected and treated early, with a 5-year survival rate of more than 90%. However, advanced disease is much more difficult to treat.
